Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Counselor

The AOD Counselor will provide substance use services to Transition Age Youth (TAY)  utilizing a harm reduction model, to both Full Service Partner and approximately 75 drop-in clients annually.  The position will be responsible for substance use outreach, screening/ assessment, treatment planning/case monitoring, substance use/abuse curriculum, individual counseling, and drop-in groups.  Groups may include multi-family, addiction/recovery education.


  • Conducting outreach to clients around substance issues and to potential TAY clients in the community
  • Engaging with TAY clients around substance use choices and consequences, including helping them attend local AA/NA meetings
  • Utilizing evidence-based practices for substance use assessment, including surveys, assessment tools/measurements
  • Conducting educational and/or process groups with TAY and/or their family members around substance use issues
  • Acting as the Liaison with Marin County Mental Health and Substance Use Services on substance use work in the TAY Program
  • Active participation in running the TAY drop-in center with other TAY staff
  • Collaboration with treatment and/or service teams, and attendance/active participation in team meetings
  • Meeting with participants in the community or in the home to facilitate engagement and provide support in achieving goals
  • Completing all required documentation and outcome data in a timely manner
  • Administrative tasks associated with the TAY Program including electronic health record systems and other record keeping requirements.


  • Drug and Alcohol Certification (such as Registered Addiction Specialist (RAS), CADAC) required
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred;
  • Experience working with transitional age youth preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/bicultural applicants preferred
  • A valid California driver’s license, personal automobile for the job, insurable by SHS’ insurance policy based on DMV record and personal vehicle insurance
  • Available afternoons, early evenings and occasional weekend hours

TAY Space program, a community center for youth ages 16-25 (transitional age youth, or TAY) who struggle with mental, behavioral, and/or emotional disorders including bipolar, schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. Many TAY Space clients also navigate poverty, homelessness, and histories of foster care, incarceration, hospitalization, abandonment, and/or abuse. TAY Space is specifically designed to support this age group in managing their mental health with therapy and psychiatric services; connecting to resources for housing, education, and employment; and building on their strengths to forge a self-sufficient future.
